About our Puppies
Here at Patchwork Bernese we are beginning the journey of responsible breeding with our first Berner Oakley. We will keep a puppy from most of our litters to continue our line. That means we will always strive to breed dogs with the soundest temperaments, excellent breed type and conformation, intelligence, and work ethic.
What drove us to purchase our first Bernese was their sound temperament and we will breed for that first and foremost. We believe that sweet, intelligent, confident, and easy to train dogs will be easy to live with, so breeding these traits are very important to us. Our puppies will be raised in a loving positive environment, that will nurture and help them develop those traits, so they can learn to live with you at home. Socialization holds a big part in achieving this and is very important to a new puppy. While they are with us we will socialize them with as many different situations as possible. This will include children, neighbors. and family members. Our puppies will be exposed to new sounds, car rides, and everyday household noises. We will also allow our puppies to explore new toys, different types of surfaces, things to climb in and under. We feel the more of these things we can expose them to as young pups the easier it will be for them to adjust in their new homes.
As part of our puppies first days of life we will incorporate SuperPuppy Protocol which is Early neurological stimulation. This helps our puppies to be cool, calm, collected dogs. Which will help them to not be afraid of new experiences, seek out adventure, and love their family.
When our puppies leave us we encourage our families to continue positive socialization, and to use our guidelines to exposing them to new people and dogs, and new places. Begin training to teach them manners, how to interact with other dogs, and learn how to explore safely. All of this will help them become an enjoyable member of the family. Training is a very high priority for us, so much so we have placed clearly in our contract that you must attend at least 2 full sessions of positive based training. Trust us these dogs are so smart you will beam with joy when your puppy is the smartest in the class. You will be amazed, as I was, they push you to be a better trainer and want more for them.
Our next priority is overall health of our dogs. If you have done your research you know that the longevity of the Bernese Mountain Dog (BMD) is an issue. All reputable breeders are striving to increase the longevity of the BMD. We obtain many health clearances before breeding, we look at pedigrees that have long lived dogs, and really strive to breed only those dogs free of inherited health problems. We do the very best we can with the knowledge that is there for us. Participation in Berergarde and OFA is important to help put this information out there publicly for people to utilize openly. This information is out there for our prospective puppy families, as well, to benefit from and help them make a well informed decision as to which breeder they should seek a puppy from.
Everything listed above is information we learned from the breeder of our first Bernese Mountain Dog (Oakley), Dayna and Scott Merrow of Spellbound Bernese. We felt it important to share this with you as they have raised heathy and well adjusted puppies for numerous families. We hope to continue this with the beautiful, confident and intelligent girl they entrusted to us to care for and breed responsibly.
